Wireless networking technologies are increasingly penetrating into everyday life. Examples of successful technologies such as the IEEE 802.11 family of Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) protocols, and Bluetooth for Personal Area Networks (WPANs), are intended to provide the flexibility of forming networks in an ad hoc manner, without access to any infrastructure, or by extending a pre-existing network infrastructure, e.g. to provide access to a wired campus LAN and/or the Internet. Recent developments also foresee WLAN technologies to be a complement to third generation mobile communication networks. The use of WLAN as radio access network in hot spot areas is seen as an approach to increasing network capacity, handling a larger number of users.

Wireless mobile devices, on the other hand, are encountered in nearly universal use - that is, at home, at work, on the road - to access the Internet and to provide data services in general. This leads to a growing expectation from users to be able to access information anytime anywhere. Wireless networks have thus become increasingly important to satisfy the end user demand for mobile and pervasive computing.

WLN 2003, the 3rd Workshop on Wireless Local Networks, will be a one-day workshop,  held in conjunction with the IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN). The workshop will bring together networking researchers, engineers, and practitioners with participants from industry, academia, and government.

Based on the success of the preceding workshops, we are interested in visionary, experimental, systems-related and work in-progress papers in the area of local and personal wireless, mobile, ad hoc and home networking. Papers should describe original, previously unpublished work, not currently under review by another conference, workshop, or journal.

Topics of interest:

(include but are not limited to)
  • Wireless LAN and PAN media access techniques and protocols
  • Energy efficiency in protocol and systems design
  • Mobility management in wireless networks
  • User mobility models and workloads
  • Wireless environment simulation modelling
  • Location dependant/personalised wireless applications
  • Security issues in WLANs/WPANs
  • Ad hoc networking
  • Ad hoc routing protocols and algorithms
  • Transport protocols for ad hoc networks
  • Self configuration for ad hoc networks
  • Mobile ad hoc computing platforms and testbeds
  • Wireless ad-hoc network simulation techniques
  • Interoperability issues between wireless standards/protocols and the Internet
  • Performance of Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11 networks
  • Multiple wireless protocol coexistence issues
  • Quality of Service issues in local wireless networks
  • Wireless multimedia network architectures and protocols
  • Resource allocation in wireless LANs

Keynote:
"WLAN Security Threats & Solutions" by Franjo Majstor, Cisco Systems

Presentation Slides:

The keynote presentation slides are available for download here (9 per 1 page).

Abstract:

This session will give an overview of the latest trends in 802.11 based WLAN technology. Starting from the threat model and security problems in the 802.11 protocol design it will describe the proposed industry solutions and the results of the latest IETF and IEEE standardization efforts for solving security problems in various WLAN environments.

About the speaker:
Franjo Majstor, EMEA Consulting Engineer, Cisco Systems, Brussels, Belgium

Franjo Majstor holds an University Graduate Engineering degree from University of Zagreb, Croatia and Master of Science degree which he obtained on subject "IPsec Extensions" from Faculty of Computer Sciences at KUL University of Leuven, Belgium. He started his industry carreer back in 1990, joined Cisco Systems in 1995 where he is currently working out of Brussels office.

In his role of EMEA technical consultant, he is focusing on security and VPN related technologies and is involved as a trusted adviser in designs of major security network related projects in Europe, Middle East and Africa. He holds a CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional) certification from ISC2 (International Information Systems Security Certifications Consortium) and CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert) in security and access certifications from Cisco Systems and is a member of several professional assisiations inluding CSI (Computer Security Insititute), ISSA (Information System Security Association), IEEE and IETF.

About Cisco Systems

Cisco Systems, Inc. is the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. Cisco's Internet Protocol-based (IP) networking solutions are the foundation of the Internet and most corporate, education, and government networks around the world. Cisco provides the broadest line of secure solutions for transporting data, voice and video within buildings, across campuses, or around the world.

Cisco Systems chairs the IEEE 802.11i task group on MAC Enhancements for Enhanced Security (Dave Halasz), which is working on producing a standard that will further improve Wireless LAN security (for more info see the TG-info web page ). Furthermore, Cisco participates in the IEEE 802.11e task group on MAC Enhancements for Quality of Service.
